St. Augustine

Raleigh St. Augustine turf grassRaleigh St. Augustine is a vigorous, medium green, medium textured lawn grass. Raleigh is presently the highest-ranking cold tolerant SAD (St Augustine Decline) resistant variety of St. Augustine available. St. Augustine is commonly used as a ground cover in pastures and ranches, thanks to its drought tolerance and hardiness. St Augustine can be started with plugs, sprigs or sod (seed is less effective); once cultivated, it spreads on its own by means of runners. It's a grass that's well suited for tropical and subtropical regions, and can be found in Mexico, Central and South America and much of the southeastern United States.

Characteristics:

  • Drought Tolerance Good
  • Heat Tolerance Good
  • Cold Tolerance Excellent
  • Shade Tolerance Good
  • Wear Resistance Fair
  • Mowing Height 2 1/4 - 4"

DelMar St. Augustine is a vigorous, dark green, medium-textured lawn grass. It is one of the most cold tolerant varieties of St. Augustine. DelMar has a superior emerald green color and maintains good color in winter. It's a low-maintenance grass, but does need careful attention while planting and cultivating it. It's advisable to plant DelMar during moderate weather conditions, using either plugs or sod. It will need plenty of short watering sessions for the first month or so, and responds well to slow-release nitrogen fertilizer about two weeks after planting. It's a tough, resilient grass that can be cut fairly short when mowing

Characteristics:

  • Drought Tolerance Good
  • Heat Tolerance Good
  • Cold Tolerance Excellent
  • Shade Tolerance Excellent
  • Wear Resistance Fair
  • Mowing Height 2 - 2 1/2"

AmeriShade St. Augustine is the most shade tolerant St. Augustine grass available. It has a semi-dwarf growth habit with smaller blades and shorter internodes. It also has a rapid rate of spread with less vertical growth than other St. Augustines, producing approximately 50% less clippings. AmeriShade is a dark green grass with a medium to fine texture. It's not as drought tolerant and bug-resistant as some St. Augustine varieties, but it does retain its color well year-round and is tough on weeds. Bear in mind that there are no effective herbicides that can kill the grass-type weeds that might spring up from AmeriShade (without killing the grass itself).

Characteristics:

  • Drought Tolerance Moderate
  • Heat Tolerance Moderate
  • Cold Tolerance Moderate
  • Shade Tolerance Excellent
  • Wear Resistance Fair
  • Mowing Height 1 - 3

Bermuda

Bermuda grass 'golf' turfCommon Bermuda is a medium to fine textured warm season perennial species with a creeping growth habit. It grows rapidly during the late spring, and summer, remains green into the fall and goes dormant after a hard frost. The blades of common Bermuda grass are grey-green, and generally fairly short. Although Bermuda grass has a fairly shallow root system, it spreads quickly through nodes and runners and is drought- and bug-tolerant.

Common Bermuda grass likes full sun better than shade, and tends to become dormant and turn brown in the winter.

Bermuda is a perennial grass grows in tropical, sub-tropical and the transition zones. Found extensively on lawns, golf courses, sports fields and arenas, reclamation areas, parks, coastal areas and pastures.

Characteristics:

  • Drought Tolerance Excellent
  • Heat Tolerance Excellent
  • Cold Tolerance Good
  • Shade Tolerance Poor
  • Wear Resistance Excellent
  • Mowing Height 1 - 1 1/2

TifWay 419 Bermuda is deep green in color and medium to fine in texture. 419 Bermuda has excellent weed and disease resistance and is a superior turf for fairways, tees, athletic fields and home lawns. Its toughness, beauty and even growth has made it a popular sports turf for decades. It recovers quickly from injury and traffic, and does well during drought conditions; the fact that it can easily withstand 100-degree-plus temperatures make it a great choice for Central Texas lawns. 419 Bermuda greens up faster in the spring and retains its color longer in the fall.

Characteristics:

  • Drought Tolerance Excellent
  • Heat Tolerance Excellent
  • Cold Tolerance Good
  • Shade Tolerance Poor
  • Wear Resistance Excellent
  • Mowing Height 1/2 - 1 1/2

Zoysia

Zoysia turfPalisades Zoysia is a dark green in color and has a medium to course texture. It spreads by runners and is slower growing than hybrid Bermudas. Palisades has good establishment and regrowth and is extremely drought tolerant. It is also very cold tolerant. It's been a good choice for lawns, golf fairways, industrial parks, sports fields and highway medians. Palisades has a medium to coarse texture turf, it tolerates mowing as close as 1/2" and is noted for shade tolerance and low water use requirements. It's a tough, aggressive grass that is a good choice for Central Texas lawns.

Characteristics:

  • Drought Tolerance Excellent
  • Heat Tolerance Good
  • Cold Tolerance Excellent
  • Shade Tolerance Good
  • Wear Resistance Excellent
  • Mowing Height 1 - 2 1/2

El Toro Zoysia is light green in color and has a dense medium texture. El Toro is a highly durable turf. It spreads by runners and is slower growing than hybrid Bermudas. It adapts well to high heat and tolerates moderate shade. EL Toro isn't quite as drought tolerant as some other strains, but it does control weeds well and isn't prone to bug problems. El Toro does tend to become dormant and turn brown during periods of extended drought. It is exceptionally hardy as far as traffic and wear resistance.

Characteristics:

  • Drought Tolerance Excellent
  • Heat Tolerance Excellent
  • Cold Tolerance Good
  • Shade Tolerance Good
  • Wear Resistance Good
  • Mowing Height 1 - 2 1/2

Emerald Zoysia is a dark green, fine leafed, dense growing grass. Emerald is known as the 'Cadillac' of turf. The root system is very drought tolerant and the stolons grow under ground which also makes it more cold tolerant. Once established Emerald is highly weed resistant and wear resistant. Emerald was developed in the 1950s, making it one of the oldest Zoysia strains in Texas. It's a dense, fine grass, but it needs a consistent cut (a reel type mower may be best), and tends to accumulate a heavy amount of thatch over years.

Characteristics:

  • Drought Tolerance Excellent
  • Heat Tolerance Good
  • Cold Tolerance Excellent
  • Shade Tolerance Good
  • Wear Resistance Excellent
  • Mowing Height 3/4 - 2 1/2

Buffalo

Buffalo grassBuffalo 609 is a blue green, dense, fine textured grass. 609 is best adapted for areas with low annual rainfall. Buffalo grasses in general like warm weather and tend to go dormant in the fall and winter, and may become dormant and turn brown during a prolonged drought. Buffalo 609 can actually be weakened by over-fertilization, and it requires a lower nitrogen content than Bermuda grasses do. Bear in mind, though, that Buffalo grass has a slower growth rate than Bermuda grass, making it a poorer choice for high-traffic areas.

Buchloe dactyloides, is a perennial grass native to the Great Plains from Montana to Mexico. In Texas, it is commonly found from South Texas to the Texas Panhandle; but is rarely found on the sandy soils in the eastern part of the state or in the high rainfall areas of southeast Texas. It is one of the grasses that supported the great herds of buffalo that roamed the Great Plains. It's also a sun-loving grass and doesn't generally do well with shade tolerance.

Buffalograss also provided the sod from which early settlers built their houses.

Characteristics:

  • Drought Tolerance Excellent
  • Heat Tolerance Excellent
  • Cold Tolerance Good
  • Shade Tolerance Low
  • Wear Resistance Moderate
  • Mowing Height 2 - 4 1/2

Certain herbs do great as xeriscape plants! Mexican oregano, garlic chives, fennel, and several others do just fine with very little care. In fact, they barely notice if you quit watering for awhile. Rosemary, in particular, can thrive and keep growing until it's the size of a car.
